How to Access VPN - Linux
Warning: This guide can be outdated.
Can't provide support/assistance from Serveis TIC and HelpDesk to the problems and inconveniences for the VPN connection on Linux/UNIX endpoints. The university has no GlobalProtect client available for Linux/UNIX. However, here are some recomended configuration examples only for reference:
The OpenConnect client is not official and its operation is not supported. It is an open source program. If you have problems with its operation, you can contact the developer or contribute and fix the problem yourself: https://gitlab.com/openconnect/openconnect
If using a graphical environment, GNOME is recommended.
A) Quick option with CLI with Openconnect (option for advanced Linux users)
- Install openconnect
sudo apt install openconnect < />
- Enter the following order with your login (without @students.salle.url.edu)
sudo openconnect --protocol=gp cadi.salle.url.edu -q -b -i VPN_Salle --user=login
- Enter the password, the OTP and the password again.
To close the VPN you have to kill the openconnect process (you can find it with "ps -aux | grep openconnect") or restart the system.
B) Extended option with graphical interface with Openconnect (option for novice Linux users). Preferred option.
1. Install the following packages and their dependencies:
- apt instal network-manager-openconnect network-manager-openconnect-gnome openconnect
2. Restart your computer
3. Create a VPN connection from the settings:
i. Access the settings and go to the Network section:
Ii. Click the add a new VPN sign +
Iii. Choose the "Multi-protocol VPN client (openconnect)" option. If you don't see this option, the previous packages haven't been installed correctly or your computer hasn't been restarted.
Iv. A menu will open with different parameters:
identity:
- Name: <Whatever you prefer>
- VPN Protocol: Palo Alto Networks GlobalProtect
- Gateway: cadi.salle.url.edu
- Token Mode: Disabled
IPv4: Leave default, automatic.
IPv6: Leave default, automatic.
v. The VPN connection is configured.
wine. Activate the VPN with the switch or from the drop-down menu in the top right bar. A menu will appear asking for the login:
Vii. Once you have logged in, click "Login" and you will be asked for the TOTP code that will arrive by mail or application. Intrude it and click "Login":
Viii. A connection verification will be required to choose the portal. There is only one. Click "Login" once more.
Ix. You will be asked for your password again. Enter it and click "Login".
x. The connection will be made at this point. If the switch has worked, it has been selected and we can verify that we are connected from the top menu on the right:
Supported devices (by vendor, not La Salle URL)
The guarantee of operation is totally dependent on the manufacturer PaloAlto Networks. In the following graph, can be seen which equipment is supported:

Versions not supported by La Salle URL nor PaloAlto Networks:
- AOSP-based Android or custom distro: Not supported.
- Google Chrome OS: Not supported.
- Other LINUX/UNIX distros: Not supported by La Salle URL or PaloAlto Netowrks.
- Raspbian, Ubuntu IoT, and Windows IoT: Not supported.
